A rare and unusual transitional Rapier small sword.

This example is likely Italian in origins and of the mid 18th century.
It is just under 107cms long overall. The blade length is 86.5cms long.
The hilt is a cut steel type of similar form to that seen on small swords. Atop the hilt is a cup guard and a rectangular support tube over the extended tang.
The presence of the cup guard and the room between the guard and the cross bar offers the user a fore grip of two fingers and a thumb to sit comfortably under the guard. This in turn offers an almost pistol like grip found in modern fencing equipment and an excellent control of the blade.

A very good well balanced sword of an unusual styling seen in a very short time in history and very rare.
