A very fine and rare Borneo shield of the Sea Dayaks.
This shield stands 133cms tall and 38.5cms across.
It is manufactured from a single carved piece of timber that is reinforced through the application of 12 applied horizontal broad rattan strips that have been woven to the body of the shield.
The presence of these rattan bindings offers greater strength to the shield that prevents the timber body from splitting during use.
The entire front and back is painted in a natural earthy pigment known to be found on weapons and shields of the region.
To the reverse of the shield in a black dye are vertical borders along the edges and a dramatic central tattoo like design around the integral timber handle.
A very fine, rare and visually dramatic shield of the Sea Dayaks of Borneo.
