A very good Chinese Jian.

This sword measures 58.5cms in its scabbard, 56.5cms out and has a blade length of 43cms.
The hilt consists of s reeded dark timber grip and heavily decorated brass fittings. The theme throughout these fittings is of longevity, fortune and happiness with the longevity symbol central throughout all fittings and the bat flying about these symbols for fortune and happiness in long life.
The cross guard is also central in the fortune theme as it is from the front a stylised bat silhouette.
The blade is a very strong with both distal taper through profile and cross section.
The scabbard is covered in turtle shell veneer and bould in brass fittings that share the same symbolism as seen on the hilt fittings.

A very good example of the type considered to be of the mid 19th century and typically political gifts.
