A large 19th century fighting Barong.
This lovely Moro Datu large working/fighting sword of a measures 62cms long in the original timber scabbard, 59cms out and carries a blade just under 42cms.
The the finely carved bunti wood hilt has losses to the Kakatua tip, most likely this sword would have been 61cms overall.
The blade shows a spine approx 8mm thick, the blade surfaces show a nice pattern steel, the edges are razor sharp and the tip is full.
The original scabbard is a perfect fit with rattan binding to the tip and small losses to the throat area.
For comparable Datu fighting swords, please view figure 20, page 37 of Robert Cato's book Morro Swords.
A nice complete fighting sword from the Philippines.
