A fine large Ceylonese Pia Kaetta.

This Pia Kaetta measures 31cms long.
The exquisitely carved and decorated hilts of these knife types, along with their carved and chiseled steels are simply outstanding and this high quality example is no different and is testimony to the skills of the Old Ceylonese craftsmen from the 18th century and earlier.
The hilt has a thick faceted tang over which sits carved ivory bolsters and thick carved turtle shell grip slabs. Each side is pinned and embellished with silver rosettes and paneling and a large decorative end cap.
The heavy blade is surrounded by large scrolling cloud like fittings at its forte and continues through to a forward curving tip. Each face is chiseled in deep relief with floral and vine motifs that are covered with semi precious alloys as is the spine.

A fine, large old example of Ceylonese traditional craftsmanship.
