A fine Nias sword, Balato.

A rarely seen and little known Nias sword, being the coming of age sword used as an everyday sword, and usually worn as a companion sword to the head-hunting type in festival and head hunting.
This sword measures 49.5cms long in its scabbard, 48cms out and with a 37cm long blade.
The hilt is a rich dark timber mounted in a bronze collar. Its pommel is a simply carved representation of the Lasara and has a small pierced hole between its jaws.
The blade is heavy for its size. It is forward curving with a clipped tip and a deep belly. Its edge remains sharp and there is a small and unusual decorative profile at the forte.
The scabbard is rattan bound timber with a lightly carved throat.

A fine example in excellent condition throughout.
