A stunning early 19th century Gothic Dagger.
Likely French by design this outstanding jewellry quality dagger features some of the most detailed workmanship seen on such an item.
The cruciform dagger appears to have once been a necklace dagger with two small holes either side of the top of the sheath, a point which offers perfect hanging balance.
Overall this piece is just under 18cms, out of the sheath it is 17cms with a blade length of 10cms.
The blade is a forged tapered diamond section with two major and two minor fullers to each side.
All fittings are silver with no surface left undecorated.
The decorations are many. Besides the stone and glass inlay, there are enameled and gilded surfaces. Design elemens include gargoyles, eagle heads, what appears to be the Green Man, grapes, curatins, ribbons, wings, cutain ropes, scrolled decorations and other interesting geometric aspects.
A very fine and rare dagger of beautiful form and superb quality.
