A very fine Dragon sword form the Boxer Rebellion era.
This example of the Prussian 1889 model is just over 101cms in the scabbard, just over 98cms out with a blade length of just under 83cms.
These very rare swords have a Chinese dragon on the guard rather than a German eagle or state emblem that is normally seen.
It has been recorded that German eye witnesses to the Boxer Rebellion report finding such swords in Chinese positions at Taku and in Chinese arsenals. Refer to the web based Dragon Article- "China-Waffen" at Traditionsverband for further documentation and images of these sword used within Chinese regiments of the Boxer Rebellion.
The hilt retains all original and undamaged shark skin that is bound in silver wire being another unusual facet.
The spine of the blade is thick and the blade is full in profile.
A wonderful sword in outstanding condition right down to the thick original leather spacer at the forte.
The sword is in as found condition, still retaining evidence of the previous owners polish to the brass that will be left for the new custodian to attend to if they wish to.
A very rare sword, seldom seen in the market place.
