A very nice complete Afghanistan Shamshir with a very fine signed blade and original scabbard.
Both the hilt and the scabbard have been blackened (Japanning) much the same as the Scottish did with their basket hilt swords, applied so the glint of steel in the sunlight would not give away postiions of men under sunlight.
The hilt type found on this example is of a less elaborate type styling that can be found on these swords but decorative non the less with facteing, fluting and pierced edges to the pommel.
The scabbard is rayskin over timber with an iron fitting to the base. It is open on the back of the throat to enable the deeply curved blade to be drawn.
The blade is of very fine quality and is covered in old grease except for the area I have wiped to better show the gold inlayed cartouche. There are double fullers below the spine, running through to the tip, these are highlighted on both sides with gold inlay at the hilt end. The blade retains a very sharp edge and is free from rust or pitting and is very fast and capable in the hand.

A very fine example of a quality tribal sword from Afghanistan that would grade up very well with the grease removed and light polish.
