A fine Maori Chief's staff 19th century Taiaha www.swordsantiqueweapons.com

A fine Maori Taiaha, long handled fighting staff.

This Taiaha pictured measures 147cms long and just under 7cms wide across the rau.
The entire staff displays a warm and pleasing age patina with a few small blemishes to the base of the rau.
The upoko and arero(head and tongue) show superior carvings and remain in very good condition.
The eye sockets have long lost the paua inlay but do retain most of the red wax used to secure them within the sockets.
The tinana(body) has a slight bow and the section below the upoko carries a slight natural twist.

A fine and rare fighting staff of the New Zealand Maori, circa mid 19th century.
