A very rare sword with a rarer seldom seen VOC blade.

This West Javanese sword measures 67cms long when in its scabbard. Out is measures 64cms long with a blade length of just under 51cms.
The hilt is constructed from very high quality silver over a timber core.
The blade is an extremely rare 18th century VOC cutlass blade with the VOC having ports within the West Java regions during this time. The blade is clearly marked with its date of manufacture being 1769, the VOC trade logo and "A" for Amsterdam, one of the six chambers or trading centers of the Vereinigte Ostindische Compagnie.
The scabbard is of blackened timber, bound with silver fittings with the drag now absent.
The degree of finesse seen within the designs of the silver work is a testament to the skills of the Javanese craftsmen of the 18th century.

A very rare Javanese sword with a blade type of even rarer form.
A very important study piece when one considers how few examples of genuine VOC blades are found in collections and museums within the Netherlands and other parts of the world.
